Rogers AT&T (in Canada)

Cell Phone Users MUST Read

________________________

  • ORIGINALLY POSTED 19 OCTOBER 02

  • Updated May 08

  • This policy may have changed but everyone should ask where coverage is available.

  •  VERIZON has also been updated.

Important Extra Info for Cdns

  • CHECK WITH YOUR PHONE COMPANY TO FIND OUT IF THERE ARE ANY CHANGES IN CELL FEES FOR  THE AREA  YOU PLAN TO TRAVEL.

  • CANADA'S EXPLORER RV CLUB CHECKED WITH BELL MOBILITY ---(one of their advertisers). Bell is not charging extra fees for use in some areas.  Rogers may no longer be doing this - but ASK?

  • They were doing so in 2002 with the result of high roaming fees in quite a few areas in the USA - BUT policies constantly change.

  • Please do not take my word for this ---Talk to your cell carrier and ASK   ???'s.
  • Be sure to call Rogers AT&T  OR your CELL CARRIER for accurate info.

Our Outstanding Verizon Service

Spring 2008

for calls to and from Canada

Verizon plans and all cell carrier plans constantly change. It affects Canadian Snowbirds but also Americans travelling to Canada in the summer. The changes  are not all bad. www.verizonwireless.com

In my seminars and articles and on this website I praise the virtues of Verizon and I still love being a Verizon customer - have been since 02. They continue to be a great company to deal with but especially for Canadian RV snowbirds - but nothing stays the same in life.

Verizon's only phone plan that now includes calling to and from Canada is the 'North America Choice'  (name may change from time to time) - they begin at $59.99 for the basic plan of 450 ANYTIME minutes - includes long distance, airtime and roaming. There is no longer unlimited FREE after hour minutes - HOWEVER on this plan; after-hour minutes now equal 1000 (after 9 pm and weekends). BUT on this plan these extra minutes ARE ALSO available to call Canada and when you return home. The 1000 minutes of ‘IN’ Network where Verizon users can talk to each other at no cost within Verizon service areas. In Cda most calls are connected thru Extended Networks so the 'IN' minutes do not apply.

Plans in the USA usually cost much less than Cdn Plans and for the most part they offer extended minutes. It always pays to shop around.

NOTE: Visitors to Canada should upgrade their less expensive US plans to use their phones while they are north of the border.

There are very very few Roaming areas left where we have travelled in Cda. If the triangle is flashing your call should go through as part of your plan.

(If the phone indicates you are not in Extended Network check the triangle indication to see if you are roaming. If so, it may cost you  to use your phone - unless it is an emergency, be cautious).

Many features like voice mail, call forwarding, data etc are included in all Verizon plans. Before choosing any cell calling plan with any carrier, do your research. Unless you have a 'Pay-As-You-Go Card' there will be a fee to break a contract.

FYI - Verizon pays $25.00 for referrals. Feel free to use my phone number.  850-384-3835.

LAST Point - if you have any charges on your statement call Verizon - they are a super company to work with.

THIS POLICY IS STILL IN EFFECT DECEMBER 2004

May 02, Rogers AT&T in Canada  sent customers a letter stating that their Digital One Rate USA CELL Plan would cover calls all over the USA as part of their service HOWEVER in less than 1% (approx 40) of US cities users  would be charged an extra fee of $4.00 per minute IF??? they had the digital one-rate plan and much higher if they did not.

This may have changed since that time but it would be very wise to check intricate details with your Cell company.

As we headed south that year I called Rogers for an update. Locating a listing of these costly service areas became an extensive task. Their current 'Main city' listings were extremely deceptive - they usually covered a large area where many RVers gravitated - such as the entire RIO GRANDE VALLEY .  Each per/minute roaming fee cost an additional $4.00.

After much research Rogers AT&T (in Canada) left me NO choice but to purchase an American phone/plan when my contract was up on the 23 October 02.

As of 25th October 02 I became a Verizon customer (USA) because of their generous after-hour plan.  (See notes at left).  You do need a USA Address for billing purposes AND AN AMERICAN CELL PLAN CAN ONLY BE PURCHASED IN THE USA. However the phone was processed using my Cdn MasterCard. A Cdn mailing address may??? be acceptable.

That's it for now everyone.  Trust no one, check it out yourself to see if you will have coverage where you will be this winter.  P&J

Since 25 October 2002 I have been happily using a phone from  Verizon Wireless in the USA.

Using a cell as a Dial-up for email is slowly coming to an end.  If your phone still allows this option, consider it a BONUS.  These days all Cell companies on both side of the border sell convenient 'Aire Cards' to connect via HighSpeed to the Net in the majority of places. Unfortunately these Cards do not travel across the border from Cda to USA or USA to Cda.

Aire Cards usually include a 2 year contract with a monthly Fee.  So for Cdn Snowbirds or Visitors to Canada to use an Aire Card in a country other than where you bought the Card, expect to pay extra for 'kbp' use OR buy two cards and keep putting one on vacation - A big Pain in the Butt.

As of Spring 08 I am still overjoyed to be a Verizon customer. John and I both have a phone on the Family Plan.  We use them as a Walkie Talkie when we are shopping etc.     Peggi
