Wireless e-mail access is perfect for on the road RVing.

When we are up and running by ordering from the link above we receive a commission from the sale which helps to defray costs associated with maintaining this website.  We used Pocketmail almost exclusively for over two years.  What a great experience.  Many friends stay in email contact WITHOUT A COMPUTER simply by using this neat device.  RV Life is easier using POCKETMAIL.

Imagine receiving and sending e-mail without a computer or Internet access. Thanks to constant technological changes and a service developed by PocketScience Inc. this amazing feat is now possible. The service is called PocketMail.

John and I discovered this service several years ago (while in Texas). We then acquired PocketMail Sharp TM-20 unit (a computer-style device about the size of an electronic organizer) made by Sharp Technologies.

Wherever we were, if there was a phone available John and I picked up and sent e-mail in less than a minute even while we were in Mexico. That compact Sharp TM-20 unit connects to analogue cell phones, pay phones, cordless phones, and landlines. However the Sharp TM-20 device has been replaced with the new similar styled 'Composer'.  Both units work and look similar. However Composer users can pick up and send email using a digital cell phone as well as a landline or pay phones.

Transmission is accessible inside buildings, in underground facilities, on busy or noisy streets and anywhere there is a telephone. Occasionally 'dialing in' will be interrupted when a line is not clear, but redialing or using another phone usually completes the transmission. No cables or telephone jacks or adapters are needed to connect. As an added bonus, the PocketMail service can block or filter messages from specific senders, domain names or messages displaying particular words. A very important feature in the present world of junk email.

The high-speed accurate transmission of PocketMail messages offers a truly mobile worldwide simplified 'stay in touch' service. To access e-mail, users dial an 800 number (toll-free- in Canada/USA), put a Palm Pilot or Sharp TM-20 (or any other compatible device that can be configured with PocketMail) up to the telephone receiver, push the PocketMail button and wait while new messages in the outbox are sent and incoming mail is received. The entire process usually takes less than a minute and a quiet buzzer alerts us to new messages.

Retrieving incoming messages is also easy: Turn on your unit, push the inbox button, highlight the message you wish to read and click the enter button. On our Sharp TM-20, the displayed message is similar to e-mail on our computer. In the past when the full-length message is longer than 4,000 characters, the last portion of the message is not available.  Recently users of this great device could opt not to have this restriction.  You still can not receive attachments but the length of the message no longer need be a restriction.

If you routinely receive numerous e-mail messages, it is possible to set the program so only subject headings are displayed. This provides an opportunity see what messages require immediate action. If your computer is not easily accessible, simply change the settings and dial in again, the entire message will be available and ready for action.

Many RVers without a computer stay in e-mail contact using only pocketmail---the central PocketMail server works like an Internet Service Provider.  However John and I consolidated our computer email to come in on our pocketmail device. This remarkable service works like this:  Thanks to 'Mailbox Consolidation', PocketMail copied incoming messages from a customer's primary e-mail address (or addresses). These messages still appeared on our computer when we connected to our ISP. On the downside, users can't open attached files.  Some accounts such as Hotmail.com, AOL etc. could not be copied. (FYI---We soon discovered only some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) will allow messages to be forwarded or copied to another service).

With Pocketmail there is no limit to the number of e-mails customers can send or receive, nor is there any restriction on the amount of phone check-ins. It was so great to be in e-mail contact even on the days we had no computer Internet dial-up access.  Messages can be  composed in the comfort of your RV while stationary or on the move, in a restaurant or actually anywhere.  They can be sent (and new ones picked up) whenever you have access to a telephone.

Click on the logo above to see what units are compatible with Pocketmail service. Our Sharp TM-20 is also an organizer, a scheduler, an address book, an anniversary notification and a memo pad.  The New Composer offers similar features.

The Composer also works with Digital cell phones

It is a valuable accessory to all RVers but it is especially beneficial for those who are not on-line. Thanks to PocketMail,  RV friends stay in constant contact with their kids - without a computer or excessive long distance charges. Internet users have the choice of using the PocketMail domain address or their primary e-mail account; non-computer users also now have an e-mail address (i.e. userID<your name>@ pocketmail.com).

PocketLynx is the computer software package, which transfers data from the TM-20 to your computer. Although this software costs extra AND it is not necessary to work your unit, it does simplify composing, replying or adding information to the PocketMail program via your computer rather than using the smaller PocketMail screen/keyboard.

PocketScience Inc. is the parent company of PocketMail mobile e-mail service.  A new integrated affordable mobile solution (a "cradle") called  'BackFlip' is available for Palm computing devices. The BackFlip snaps on the back of the Palm organizer. When connected to any wireless and landline telephone, including digital cell phones, the BackFlip can send and receive e-mail messages or send a fax. It consolidates personal, office or corporate e-mail much like the TM-20 and the Composer. However, the BackFlip transfers e-mail messages directly to the Palm device for reading, storing e-mail messages in files, composing replies or forwarding. The BackFlip comes with computer software that downloads information to your computer to simplify answering e-mail.

Want to send a fax? It's possible with PocketMail services for a small additional cost ranging from 25 cents to a $1.00 per page.

RVers interested in an inexpensive way to "stay in touch" NEED to take a look into  PocketMail services. Even if you are not on-line your kids probably are and you will be able to send them an e-mail (or two). You may be totally computer illiterate but the TM-20 and Composer devices are extremely easy to learn. To set up an account or to simply ask questions call customer service representatives on the company's toll-free line (1-800-390-5034). With the birth of PocketMail, it is now remarkably simple, affordable and portable to stay connected worldwide. Do you have e-mail access in your pocket?

Our compact PocketMail device fits snugly in my purse always at the ready. It's user-friendly with a standard keyboard and an easy-to-read two-inch by four-inch (2"x4") computer style screen that simplifies composing messages and entering info into the memo pad or address book. The screen displays 40 characters by 8 lines with a choice of three font sizes. Another great feature is the back-light button, perfect for enhancing poor light situations.  When you purchase the TM-20 or the Composer, information about PocketLynx is enclosed in the package.
