John
and I each have ‘claimed’ our own space. The dining area is my
work area at the computer, for sewing and for making crafts. John
loves to follow his sports teams on satellite plus he likes a good
book. Frequently he uses the bedroom as his personal space Rec Room
to watch his favourite teams on TV. |
 |
Both
of us enjoy individual hobbies that keep us busy. When weather
permits we work, play and relax outside on the patio. However we
also like be a tourist at least once or twice a week in the area of our
campground. |
 |
One
or two TV’s plus a VCR are important extras that help to occupy
young and not so young RVers during bad weather days. Some families
also carry a computer to run a wide variety of challenging games.
Laptops may be more costly but they definitely use less space than
desktops. |
 |
On
good days, hiking and biking in the campground and at nearby
locations adds diversion and dimension to an RV getaway. We
especially love picnics and a simple drive through the country. It
is a perfect way to get to know an area. |
 |
Visiting
with your new neighbours to share destinations, experiences and
developing new friendships provide diversion as well as helps to
extend space. |
 |
An
evening fire is most important to bring good weather days to a
close. |
 |
John
and I spend a percentage of our time touring the areas we are camped
in. Many RVers who travel with families allow each member to enjoy
something special at each destination. For us we usually decide what
to do depending on what’s available when we get to our new
location. |

FROM
A KIDS POINT OF VIEW
In
2002 our 12 year-old
niece Kayla joined us for a motorhome trip from BC to Ontario. Her
family loves exploring local areas in their fold down camper. I asked
Kayla “What her family did to enjoy time in a campground during less
than perfect weather”. Her answers are as follows.
-
They
frequently go away with friends; from 2-8 families each in their
own RV visit Provincial Park destinations several times throughout
the summer. This way the kids socialize in one pop-up while adults
flock to another.
-
Each
family carries a good supply of movies and compact activities on
hand.
-
Adults
play cards while the kids amuse themselves with board games, TV,
or movies on the VCR.
-
When
the family is together in their own unit, each member has a
personal space for reading etc.
-
Biking
is a favourite activity as is swimming at an on-site lake or
swimming pool—even in a gentle rain.
-
Two
of the parks this group return to often also have on-site arcade
style game rooms that provide non-stop entertainment for kids of
all ages.
-
At
times an evening event at the park adds to their getaway fun.
-
Of
course on beautiful evenings bonfires (sometimes fire works) are
very popular.
Allow the kids to be part of all planning. As soon as they are old
enough to read they can help with the details of family getaways. We
hope these tips ensure every adventure a memorable experience and more
fun than the last outing. Enjoy the journey.
